NATCHEZ — A “suspicious person” report turned into a burglary arrest for Natchez Police Friday.

Police were originally told that a man in a gray, hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and a black ski mask was seen near 6 Ouachita St. When officers arrived they saw that the door of the house had been kicked in and the house had been burglarized.

They then saw the masked man flee on a green bicycle, Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said.

After officers approached 12 Old Devereux St., where they noticed the same bicycle, Mikel Chatman, 18, 12A Old Devereux St. answered the door in a gray hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans. He was not wearing a black ski mask, but one was lying on the kitchen table.

Chatman did not deny being the masked bicycler on Ouachita Street, but said he had nothing to do with a burglary of stereo equipment. Police found the equipment at the residence, Godbold said.

“He said that was him, but he was just going to spook some kids at the bus stop,” he said.

Chatman also told police he was a business man and had traded for the stereo equipment, Godbold said.

Residents at 6 Ouachita St. are in the process of moving and were not sure if anything had been stolen, Godbold said. However, police were able to connect some of the equipment to past reports.

“We’ve probably had about 10 burglaries altogether (in the area) between businesses, cars and homes,” Godbold said.
