VICKSBURG — Last Saturday turned out to be a good day for two local private school’s junior varsity basketball teams at the 2025 MAIS District 4-5A Junior Varsity Tournament held on the campus of St. Aloysius High School.

One of those teams almost didn’t make it out of the first round. Adams County Christian School’s JV boys’ basketball team trailed host and No. 4 seed St. Aloysius at halftime before the top-seeded Rebels rallied the second half for a dramatic 33-30 win over the JV Flashes.

ACCS’s JV Rebels struggled offensively against a St. Al team that, despite being the “visiting” team as the No. 4 seed, had a distinct home-court advantage. By the time the first quarter, the JV Flashes had an 8-5 lead. ACCS continued to have a hard time getting shots to fall in the second quarter, but was perhaps lucky that St. Al did as well. Both teams scored six points in that quarter, giving the Flashes a 14-11 at the half.

Realizing their season was on the verge of possibly ending soon than expected, the Rebels responded by outscoring the Flashes 12-8 in the third quarter for a 23-22 lead at quarter’s end and then 10-8 in the fourth quarter to eke out the three-point win.

ACCS was led by Kayden Sweazy with 17 points and Trevin Barnes with 14 points. St. Aloysius was led by Gleese (no first name given) with 17 points of his own while Gittle (no first name given) added nine points.

Then it was on to the boys’ championship game later in the day against Copiah Academy and this time there was no need for a dramatic comeback as the JV Rebels had four players score in double figures en route to a dominating 55-23 win over the JV Colonels.

Ace Guedon led ACCS with a game-high 18 points while Trevin Barnes finished with 12 points. Chavarius Clemmons contributed with 11 points and Kayden Sweazy added 10 points.

The Rebels jumped out to a double-digit lead over the Colonels and by the time the first quarter had a 23-9 advantage. Even though ACCS cooled down some offensively in the second quarter, its defense continued to frustrate Copiah Academy. The Rebels outscored the Colonels 9-2 for a 32-11 halftime lead.

ACCS continued to add to its lead in the second half as it outscored Copiah Academy 11-4 in the third quarter and 12-8 in the fourth quarter. Russum McDonnell led the Colonels with nine points and Jace McDonnell ended up with seven points.

With the two wins, the ACCS JV Rebels finished with an amazing overall record of 22-5.

Cathedral JV girls capture District 4-5A JV Tournament championship

VICKSBURG — Cathedral High School’s JV Lady Green Wave entered the District 4-5A JV Tournament last Saturday at St. Aloysius as the No. 1 seed in the girls’ bracket. And it didn’t take long for the competition to see why.

In the first game of the day, the JV Lady Green Wave took care of its district and cross-town rival Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels, the No. 4 seed, 44-11.

Then in the championship game later that day, Cathedral was the ‘home’ team as the No. 1 seed against the ‘visiting’ St. Aloysius JV Lady Flashes. And while St. Al may have had the home-court advantage as the tournament host, it would not be enough as the Lady Flashes fell to the Lady Green Wave 30-15. No other information on those two games was available.

With the two wins, the Cathedral JV Lady Green Wave finished with an impressive final record of 20-3 overall.
