NATCHEZ — With Cathedral High School senior Kinslee Young the main focus for Copiah Academy’s defense, junior Molly Shirley stepped up in a big way offensively as she helped lead the Lady Green Wave to a 50-39 win over the Copiah Academy Lady Colonels last Friday night in an MAIS District 4-5A game.

Shirley, one of only three juniors on the Lady Green Wave’s varsity roster, led them in scoring with 21 points to go with four rebounds and four steals. And even though Young was held to 12 points, she still flirted with a triple-double and still made her presence felt down near the basket as she grabbed nine rebounds and blocked seven shots. Sophomore Hannah Hargon also contributed with eight points.

Cathedral pretty much had its way with Copiah Academy on both ends of the court in the first half. The Lady Green Wave led the visitors from Gallman 12-4 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored the Lady Colonels 16-5 in the second quarter for a 28-9 halftime lead.

Copiah Academy tried its best to shoot itself back in the game coming out of the locker room. The Lady Colonels outscored the Lady Green Wave 18-10 in the third quarter to make it a 38-27 game. But Cathedral played better defense in the fourth quarter to end Copiah Academy’s attempted rally. Both teams ended up scoring 12 points in that quarter.

With the win, the Lady Green Wave improved to 19-7 overall and 3-1 in District 4-5A. They played host to district and cross-town rival Adams County Christian School at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In the junior varsity girls’ game, Cathedral’s JV Lady Green Wave took care of Copiah Academy’s JV Lady Colonels 46-20 last Friday afternoon to clinch the No. 1 seed on the girls’ side of the District 4-5A JV Tournament that will take place this Saturday, Feb. 1.

Anna Arthur led Cathedral with 20 points to go with five rebounds and four steals while Anna Leigh Jordan had 10 points and six assists. The Lady Green Wave JV squad jumped out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter of play and then outscored the JV Lady Colonels 14-2 in the second quarter for a commanding 33-9 halftime advantage.

Cathedral’s JV girls team improved to 16-3 overall and 4-0 in district play. They played host to cross-town and district rival ACCS’s JV Rebels team at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
