VIDALIA, La. — According to the Concordia Parish Police Jury, road work in the parish is progressing, and “It looks good,” said board president Cornell Lewis on Monday.

The roads to which Lewis was referring are Robert Webber and Crestview drives, which both received new pavement and were recently completed, Lewis said.

“I’m very pleased about that,” Lewis said of the project completion. “Now we’re just waiting on the next project.”

In other matters on Monday, the police jury discussed revising the dress code policy for courthouse employees — both office staff and maintenance employees — so that they would have to wear polo shirts with their name and the police jury name on them.

“We have a lot of people coming through the courthouse, and that way, they will be able to identify who a person is without the name tags. We felt that was fairly important,” said board vice president Genesia Allen, who is on the board’s personnel committee.

Allen also said the committee had agreed to hire three new people for the courthouse maintenance committee and one new office staffer.

“These new hires are very promising, and I feel they are going to do very well,” Lewis said, adding, “It’s been a while” since they’ve hired new staff.

On Monday, the police jury also approved grant applications through the 2024-2025 Local Government Assistance Program and the Community Water Enrichment Fund, which it does once every year to help fund parish projects.

Specifically, the police jury said it would apply for needed courthouse updates through LGAP to its courthouse building at 4001 Carter Street.

The police jury discussed ordinance violations for an overgrowth of grass and weeds and dilapidated property at 353 and 305 Florence Matthews Drive and 156 Skipper Drive.

Allen said she had received calls for work needed on Serio Boulevard and Doty Road, though work had recently been done on those roads.

“I’ll have to do another drive-through,” she said.

No additional actions were taken during Monday’s regular meeting of the Concordia Parish Police Jury.
