AMITE, La. — Even though the Adams County Christian School Rebels lost on the road to the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets 2-1 in a pivotal MAIS Division II South game for both teams, something good did come out of that setback.
Aiden Roche’s goal midway through the second half proved to be important for ACCS despite dropping into a tie with Oak Forest Academy in the district standings. Rebels head coach Kristofer Thompson said early Monday afternoon ahead of its district and Senior Night game against Parklane Academy that the Rebels still have a plus-one goal advantage over the Yellow Jackets.
ACCS was looking to defeat Oak Forest on the road to lock up the No. 1 seed out of Division II South last Friday night. But the Yellow Jackets scored two goals in the first half and held on from there. Rebels freshman goalkeeper Bryce LaPrairie had five saves.
“That was a fast-paced game. That game was going to come down to which team made the (fewest) mistakes. Unfortunately, they made the fewer mistakes,” Thompson said. “We paid the price of a one-goal difference. The game was so even all around.”
Thompson also said the outcome of this game was determined by which team possessed the ball more and which team had more scoring opportunities. Oak Forest had the decisive edge in both of those categories.
“They were able to create more opportunities than we did. When it comes down to playing for the district championship, you can’t afford to give up those opportunities,” Thompson said.
Which means that the game against Parklane Academy will have even more meaning than expected. A win by the Rebels over the Pioneers and they will be the division’s No. 1 seed and will host a first-round playoff game on Thursday, Feb. 6 against the Division II Central No. 2 seed. But a loss could still give Oak Forest a shot at the No 1 seed and drop ACCS to the No. 2 seed and the Rebels would be on the road for the first round against the Division II Central No. 1 seed that same day.
“We get another chance at the district championship tonight. We’ll see what happens. We’re also their only loss of the season,” Thompson said.
