NATCHEZ — Kathy Graning, bundled from head-to-toe in cold weather gear, just shook her head as she looked down High Street on Tuesday morning.
“This isn’t snow,” she joked. “This is nothing.”
Graning’s tongue-in-cheek disappointment may have been shared by many across the Miss-Lou on Tuesday after projections of up to 4 inches of snow fell flat here.
The once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm struck from Texas to Florida, closing airports; crippling roadways; and killing at least 10 people nationwide.
In the Miss-Lou, however, snowfall amounts ranged from a trace to two inches, causing few issues and creating a day of fun memories for many residents.
The Miss Lou area received between one and two inches of snow on Tuesday with most areas around the City of Natchez receiving around 1.5 inches, according to Daniel Lamb, forecaster with the National Weather Service Jackson office.
Readers in the Miss Lou shared photos of youngsters playing in the snow, some of them for the first time in their lives.
Winter weather on Tuesday and Wednesday raised concerns for drivers and caused at least four traffic incidents in Adams County and a few power outages but there were no other issues, officials said.
Below-freezing temperatures continued throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, causing ice to harden on roadways. This resulted in some traffic incidents caused by vehicles sliding on black ice.
“We had two collisions and two people who ran off of the road, but no injuries,” Sheriff Travis Patten said.
Natchez Police Chief Cal Green said no weather-related wrecks or damages were reported in the city as there had been in the county.
“I want to thank everyone who stayed at home and did what we asked to keep everyone safe,” she said.
The immediate forecast includes a “couple of cold nights ahead,” but nothing to raise concern after that, Lamb said. “We’re going to be warming above freezing the remainder of the weekend,” he said.
