Weather alert issued for snow in southwest Mississippi until Thursday morning

A report from the National Weather Service was issued on Wednesday at 8:11 p.m. for snow until Thursday at 10 a.m. The alert is for Upper Lafourche, Upper St. Bernard, Upper Terrebonne, Lower Terrebonne, Lower Lafourche, Coastal Jefferson, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Northern Tangipahoa, Southeast St. Tammany, Western Orleans, Eastern Orleans, Northern St. Tammany, Southwestern St. Tammany, Central Tangipahoa, Lower Tangipahoa, Northern Livingston, Southern Livingston, Western Ascension, Eastern Ascension, Upper Jefferson, Lower Jefferson, Upper Plaquemines, Central Plaquemines, Northern Hancock, Northern Harrison, Northern Jackson, Southern Hancock, Southern Harrison and Southern Jackson as well as Pointe Coupee, West Feliciana, East Feliciana, St. Helena, Washington, Iberville, West Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, Assumption, St. James, St. John The Baptist, St. Charles, Wilkinson, Amite, Pike, Walthall and Pearl River counties.

“Temperatures across south Mississippi and southeast Louisiana have fallen below freezing this evening, with most locations reporting temperatures in the 20s at 8 p.m. Area roadways that had been wet or remained snow covered during the afternoon are likely to experience refreezing tonight. Dangerous travel conditions are expected to continue until surface temperatures warm above freezing around mid-morning Thursday. Be especially careful on bridges and overpasses if it is necessary to travel overnight, as these locations often freeze first. Motorists should check with local officials and Departments of Transportation for the latest road conditions and travel advisories,” says the NWS.
