NATCHEZ – Services for Deacon Eugene Clarence Lewis, 96, of Natchez who died on Monday, Jan. 13, 2025, in Natchez will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Lonnie Mozingo officiating.

Burial will follow at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 10 until 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at Laird Funeral Home.

Mr. Lewis was born on March 12, 1928, in Auburn, MS, the son of Thomas D. Lewis and Ethel Smith Lewis.

He was a faithful member of Salem Primitive Baptist Church and served as a deacon for many years. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. When the war ended, he moved back to his wife’s hometown Wisner, LA. He started a grocery business there with his father-in-law, Grady Stephens, Sr. He also went to Louisiana Technical College under the G.I. Bill of Rights. He desired to move back to Natchez, the town he loved. He went to work for a finance company and became manager, and was then transferred to Vicksburg, MS. Soon after, a job opened with the Fire Department in Natchez. In 1955 he moved back and worked for the Natchez Fire Department for 30 years and retired as Fire Chief in 1985.  Mr. Lewis also enjoyed sitting on the patio watching the birds and squirrels.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, and brothers.

Survivors include his daughter, Julie Elizabeth Lewis Hall of Natchez; son, Randy Eugene Lewis of Natchez; and grandsons, Bryan Lewis Hall and George Stephens Hall.
