‘Songs from the Battleground’ performance to commemorate legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

NATCHEZ – The Natchez Festival of Music will honor the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at “Songs from the Battleground.”

This free concert takes place at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Beulah Baptist Church, and will celebrate Mississippi’s vital role in the Civil Rights movement.

“Songs from the Battleground” is a heartfelt tribute that explores the rich tapestry of history and resilience in Mississippi, a state deeply intertwined with the fight for justice and equality. Through music, concert-goers can commemorate pivotal moments like the Freedom Rides, voter registration drives, and the courageous leadership of Dr. King, whose vision for a better future left an indelible mark on our nation.

The event will feature Alvin Shelby, a gifted musician and beloved member of the Natchez arts community who brings over 25 years of experience in music performance and education. His career includes performances in Italy, Canada, Africa, London, and Paris, and collaborations with legendary artists like Elton John, the Mississippi Mass Choir, and Dr. Margaret Douroux. Alvin’s music, ranging from traditional gospel to jazz, inspires audiences across the globe.

Admission to the event is free, although donations will be accepted. All donations will support the Natchez Festival of Music and its ongoing efforts to inspire through the arts.
