Severe storms, then colder days ahead

NATCHEZ — Severe thunderstorms will be possible Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening followed by below-freezing temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Severe weather is expected as a low-pressure system moves across the region.

The timing for areas near and west of the Mississippi River is approximately between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, for central Mississippi between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and for eastern and southeastern Mississippi between 7 p.m. and midnight.

The primary hazards with these storms will include damaging wind gusts as high as 60 mph, possible tornadoes and hail as large as 1 inch in diameter.

Dangerously cold weather is possible Tuesday into late next week, especially to the north of Yazoo City around the Highway 82 corridor, where wind chills as low as 15 degrees are possible.

Risks include hypothermia with prolonged exposure and possible danger to exposed pipes. Steps should be taken to protect sensitive vegetation and water pipes.

Locally, the expected high temperatures for next week are in the mid to low 40s with low temperatures in the mid 20s.
