One victim identified after fatal New Year’s Day shooting

NATCHEZ — A victim who was killed during a Dumas Drive shooting on Wednesday evening has been identified.

The deceased victim was 21-year-old Jalen L. Griffin, who had been shot in the chest area and in the shoulder during a shootout on Dumas Drive in the Marilyn Heights area, Adams County Coroner James Lee said.

“I spoke with his mother, who was devastated,” Lee said. “These killings are unfair and totally (uncalled) for. We need to get to the root of the matter. My heart goes out to this family on this very sad day.”

Natchez Police Chief Cal Green said one other person had been injured during the incident that took place inside a residence on Dumas Drive sometime before 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The injured person had been taken to the hospital. Green said after the initial investigation it appeared that both victims had been shooting at each other. The identity of the victim has not been released as the investigation continues.
