NATCHEZ — A prayer vigil at 5:30 p.m. at Natchez High School will honor 18-year-old TyKeria Rogers, a senior and cheer captain who did not survive the storm on Saturday as a tree fell on her home on Westwood Road.
Natchez Adams School District Superintendent Zandra McDonald asked for prayers for TyKeria’s mother Tequilla Rogers, who she said “loved her baby girl with every fiber of her being and worked tirelessly to give her a great life.”
The single mother and TyKeria’s two younger siblings survived the storm.
Since the incident, the community has been sending monetary donations for the family’s hotel and supplies now that they are without a place to live because of the damage to their home. A GoFundMe page was created to help them with expenses, and it quickly raised over $83,000 in community donations as of Monday morning.
An official statement on NASD’s social media said that grief counselors would be available on campus to assist those who need it.
“Ty’Keria was a bright light in our school and community, known for her talent, energy, and uplifting spirit. Her passing leaves a deep void in our hearts,” officials said. “The Natchez-Adams School District extends its heartfelt condolences to Ty’Keria’s family, friends, and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. We are committed to supporting our students and staff as we grieve this loss together. … We ask the community to keep Ty’Keria’s family and all those impacted by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers. … Ty’Keria will forever be remembered as a symbol of strength, joy, and kindness. She will truly be missed.”
