Severe storms cause tornadoes, fallen trees, power outages

Tornadoes had been spotted as storms hammered the Mississippi region hard on Saturday afternoon.

A possible tornado had been spotted around 4 p.m. in the McCall Creek area in Franklin County.

Sheriff Tom Tindle told news outlets that one person was hurt in Franklin County after a mobile home flipped upside down. Several other people suffered minor injuries in the Berrytown community and in McCall Creek on Highway 84.

Tindle said a house and church were also destroyed and that several homes in the county had roof damage.

No other injuries were reported.

In Adams County, an 18-year-old had been confirmed dead and at least two houses endured tree damage.

Trees had been reported on top of houses on Myrtle Drive and Westwood Road. The teen, identified as 18-year-old Tykeria Rogers, did not make it out of the Westwood Road home, Natchez Police Chief Cal Green said, adding others who had been inside made it out safely.

Entergy reports that 2,935 customers in Adams County are without power due to the storm.

Additionally, Southwest Mississippi Electric Cooperative members are experiencing widespread power loss across the service area, including 4,294 members in Adams County.

Fallen trees blocking roadways have been reported at Steamplant near E. Wilderness Road, U.S. 84 and John R. Junkin Drive, across U.S. 61 South in the Kingston area, 350 Foster Mound Road, just past Holstead on Palestine Road and Booker Road.

The Adams County Safe Room is open and has power for anyone who is in need of shelter. Most of the weather threat is out of the Adams County area as of 8 p.m. according to the National Weather Service, though power loss and fallen trees may impact driving conditions.

In Concordia Parish, more fallen trees and power lines but no injuries have been reported, according to the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office.
