FERRIDAY – Prentiss Clifton Hinson, 80, of Ferriday, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, with his loving wife by his side.
Prentiss was born and raised in Natchez, on Dec. 15, 1944, to John Clifton and Eva Myrtle Hinson.
He graduated from Natchez High School in 1962 and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi.
For over 40 years Prentiss was an educator who thrived on seeing his students succeed. He believed that education was a major component of success. He began his teaching career in Bay St. Louis and would later become the Headmaster at WCCA. He spent 23 years as a teacher, principal, and coach at ACCS. He would go on to teach at Trinity Episcopal Day School and Natchez High School, from where he retired from teaching in 2010. He served one year as MPSA President and received many accolades throughout his career including STAR Teacher, Teacher of the Year, and Natchez Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Teacher of the Year. He once shared this message for all of his students: “Remember what I’ve always told you: You are the most important person in the world. Come back and visit and let me see that you are a successful person.”
For a number of years, Prentiss taught the Mississippi Hunter Education Program. He also worked with his brother-in-law, Harvey “Buck” Beach, at Harvey Beach and Son Logging.
Throughout his life, Prentiss loved reading, gardening, fishing, hunting, golfing, watching the New Orleans Saints, and working on all of Karen’s honey-do projects. Later in life, he gained a new best friend, the family dog, Chip, who went everywhere he did. During his retirement years, he enjoyed drinking coffee on the patio, gathering pecans, and traveling with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Hinson; his children, Kim (William) Morrison, Stacye (Keith) Schwab, Hayley House (Adam Hester), and Hannah House; his siblings, Linda (Buck) Beach, Ted (Angela) Hinson, and Cindy (Blackshear) Snyder; father-in-law, Fred Graves; sister-in-law, Melanie Hinson; four grandchildren, Hannah (Casey) Rahn, Julia Morrison, Jacob (Grace Anne) Armand, and Olivia Armand; and seven nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerry “Conway” Hinson; and his mother-in-law, Bertha Graves.
Those honoring Prentiss as pallbearers are Jared Hinson, Roy Randall Hinson, Jacob Armand, William Morrison, Will Hinson, and Clif Hinson.
Visitation was held on Saturday, Dec. 21, at noon followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday, LA, with Harvey “Buck” Beach officiating. Following the service, Interment will be held at Oakley Cemetery in Gilbert, LA.
