NATCHEZ — On Tuesday, a judge is expected to revisit the bond of a man who had been out of jail from an attempted murder charge less than a month before being arrested again for assaulting officers in the parking lot of Natchez Walmart.
Tyrell LeShawn White, 28, known by the street name TieDye, was arrested on Nov. 27 in connection with a shooting incident 10 days earlier on Daisy Street. He had been charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
The victim Je’Mario Clay, 23, had been shot three times on Nov. 17 — including once in the forehead — while he was driving on Daisy Street and lived.
Initially, White’s bond was set at $250,000 for the attempted murder charge and $100,000 for shooting into an occupied vehicle by Natchez Municipal Court Judge Christina Daugherty.
White bonded out of jail before an altercation with officers took place Friday night.
He is being held without bond until a municipal court hearing at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
At approximately 9:45 p.m. Friday, White was parked in the fire zone outside of Walmart on Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.
When the officer searched White’s name, the officer found the warrants for the Nov. 17 shooting showing up as active warrants although they had already been served, Natchez Police Chief Cal Green said.
Police had asked White to step out of the car, but he instead tried to put the car in gear and flee, Green said. An altercation between White and the officer followed.
“Before the officer had a chance to verify whether the warrants were still active or not, this transpired,” she said. “It could have been a painless process for him to wait a minute for verification, but before the officer even had the chance to do that (White) turned violent.”
Nearby Adams County Sheriff’s Office Deputies came to assist the police officer and detain White.
“It’s a good thing that they did,” Green said after the incident, thanking the deputies. She added the officer was “a little banged up but OK.”
White was arrested again on charges of simple assault on a law enforcement officer and disorderly conduct, Green said.
Friday was not the first time that White had become violent with officers, according to Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten.
In August of 2018, White was arrested for assaulting three of Patten’s officers in the Shoney’s restaurant where the officers were having a meal and witnessed what they thought to be a drug transaction in the parking lot.
White’s arrest in November came about as part of Operation Safe Neighborhoods, a joint effort between the Natchez Police Department and Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
“I don’t have any jurisdiction or discretion on what happens before a case is bound over,” Adams County District Attorney Tim Cotton said. “City court sets bonds and I’m quite certain the judge is aware of the latest incident involving Tyrell White and that it could result in a bond revocation, but my office wouldn’t be involved unless the first case had already been bound over,” and White’s attempted murder case had not.
