It’s a routine night of approvals for Preservation Commission

NATCHEZ — In a routine monthly meeting Wednesday night, the city’s Preservation Commission approved the items on its agenda with two deviations.

In the area of unfinished business, the commission learned from City Planner Frankie Legaux that Dick Thompson of Live Oak Nursery, who seeks to build six homes in a small seven parcel subdivision on Duncan Avenue, must have his plans reviewed first by the city’s site plan committee.

Thompson’s proposed lot size is 5,200 square feet, which is less than the 7,000-square-foot allowed lot size.

Once approved, the plan will come back to the Preservation Commission, which will have to approve a variance for the houses because they will be located within 300 feet of the landmark historic properties Auburn and Hope Farm.

In other business, the commission:

–approved a request from Natalie Schwager, 305 N. Pearl St., to install a pool in the home’s backyard.

–approved a request from John Johnson, 211 Linton Avenue, to install a porch and stair railings, as well as removal of a concrete sidewalk, replacing it with a brick sidewalk in a herringbone pattern.

–approved a request from James Moore of 704 N. Pearl St., to alter the front facade of the house, removing two existing sidewalks and replacing them with one sidewalk, replacing the front door and a window on the north elevation.

–approved a request from Sharon West to install a wooden sign at 403 Dr. M.L. King North.

–approved a request from Jim Smith, on behalf of Sarah Freeman, 300 Linton Avenue, to lower the brick wall on the Clifton Avenue side of the property to three feet and grade the yard toward the wall 1 to 3 feet.

–accepted recommendations from the city’s planning administration and paint committee to approve a request from James and Olivia Hazlip at 129 S. Commerce St to replace a fence in the backyard with the same materials and color it is currently; allow Angel Painting to reroof the building at 310 N. Commerce St. with weathered wood architectural shingles; allow John Johnson at 211 Linton Avenue to repair a concrete wall and steps to the property.
