NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School standout quarterback Coleman Carter signed his national letter of intent Tuesday morning to play football at the University of Louisiana Lafayette.

Carter, 6 foot 2 inches and 188 pounds, will be a scholarship athlete for the Ragin Cajuns next football season.

Family and friends gathered in the ACCS Tuesday morning for the signing.

“I’m ready to be a Ragin Cajun,” Carter said. “I’ve always wanted to play college football and D1 (Division 1). I had other offers, but they are close to home and are a really good team.”

Carter hopes to compete quickly for the quarterback position at Louisiana.

“I feel like they will give me a shot to battle for the starting job,” he said.

While looking forward to his future, Carter said he will miss ACCS.

“It was a great experience here. If I could do it all over again, I would. Playing with my best friends, and playing for Coach King … that was the best. It was a lot of fun,” Carter said. “I’m happy just to continue playing football on the next level, and hopefully, I will be playing for a while.”

Carter was heavily recruited by Louisiana Lafayette Head Coach Michael Desormeaux and Assistant Coach Matt Bergeron.

Desormeaux began coaching the Ragin Cajuns in 2021, taking over for Billy Napier, the head coach at the University of Florida.

Desormeaux, a New Iberia native, played college football for Louisiana Lafayette. He was an assistant coach in a variety of positions for Napier, including offensive coordinator, before being tapped for the head coaching position.

Louisiana Lafayette finished its 2024 season 10 and 3 in the Sunbelt Conference and will face TCU in the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 28.

Carter guided the Rebels as quarterback all four years of his high school career and was The Natchez Democrat’s Offensive Player of the Year for 2023.

Carter is the son of David and Paige Carter of Natchez.

“I was able to go on about 15 college visits with Coleman and Lafayette was by far one of our favorite visits,” David Carter said. “The coaching staff was great to work with, and the facilities were phenomenal. Our family looks forward to him being close to home and can’t wait to see what the future holds for Coleman and the Ragin Cajuns.

“We are most grateful for all the men who have coached and supported Coleman over his athletic career in Natchez,” he said.
