NATCHEZ — Natchez Police Chief Caroline Green confirmed a suspect was arrested early Wednesday morning and is being charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle in the Nov. 17 Daisy Street shooting.
Tyrell LeShawn White, 28, known by the street name TieDye, was arrested after Natchez Police and Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies from its Special Operations Group executed an arrest and search warrant.
Je’mario Clay, 23, was shot three times, including once in the head, during the shooting. He survived his injuries.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said the arrest was part of Operation Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative effort between city police and the sheriff’s office to make Natchez safe after a rash of shootings.
“Just before 5:30 a.m., deputies of the Special Operations Group at the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and an investigator from the Natchez Police Department executed a search warrant on a residence located in the Maryland/Cambridge Heights area in search of Tyrell White, who was wanted by the Natchez Police Department for the charge of attempted murder,” Patten said. “Upon making entrance into the residence, law enforcement officers were able to take White into custody without incident.”
Investigators and officers were able to locate multiple weapons, including a rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, multiple extended magazines, loads of ammunition, a heavy, tactical bulletproof vest, and several other items, Patten said.
“This individual had better equipment than local law enforcement and had clearly prepared himself for some kind of street war. He is not a military veteran,” he said. “This operation took place under the auspices of Operation Safe Neighborhood and was a complete success.
“I want to thank Chief Cal Green and the Natchez Police Department for allowing the Adams County Sheriff’s Office to partner with her investigators in order to execute a successful search warrant on a high-level violator. This just shows how well operations can be executed when we are working on the same team toward the same goal,” Patten said.
He also thanked the Adams County Board of Supervisors and the Natchez Board of Aldermen for funding Operation Safe Neighborhoods.
“Operation Safe Neighborhoods will continue beyond this point. So far to date, at least 10 arrests have been made under Operation Safe Neighborhoods with the majority of them being felony arrests. In the future, we will give the public an update on the progress of Operation Safe Neighborhoods when time permits, but that time isn’t now because the operation is still ongoing.
“This news is worth sharing, though, because people need to see what law enforcement and what the average citizen is up against in the streets.
“With everybody getting behind and supporting law enforcement with pay to be able to hire quality personnel, equipment to utilize on operations like this, training and support — that’s a successful recipe for a safer community, and this is proof of it,” Patten said.
He said operations are being carried out with conversations with the district attorney to ensure “he has what he needs to try successful cases.”
Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson praised the results of Wednesday morning’s operation.
“Words cannot describe my gratitude to our men and women in uniform and the excellent results we are seeing from Operation Safe Neighborhoods. Natchez is already a safer place,” he said. “And a big thank you to our Police Chief Cal Green and our Sheriff Travis Patten for their dedication and focused attention to this effort.
“And thanks also to our District Attorney Tim Cotton who has provided great leadership in making the appeal for this cooperation to happen. It’s a blessing to see everyone working together, city and county, to protect the citizens of our community. I fully expect the good news to continue,” Gibson said.
