NATCHEZ — Kendra Shultz of Denham Springs and Charles Feltus of Natchez are winners of the monthly amateur Natchez Sunset photo contest for the months of September and October.
Shultz and Feltus both captured amazing rays of golden sunlight reflected on the surface of the Mississippi River. Shultz captured two sons, one shining brightly above the Mississippi River bridges and the other reflected on the water’s surface. This photo is simply named, “Sunset on the Mississippi.”
Feltus captured his sunset shrouded by a uniquely shaped cloud, appearing as an angel with outstretched wings. He calls this capture, “Blessings.”
The 12-month competition welcomes entrants to submit photos for a monthly selection of a winner now through April 30, 2025.
Each first-place winner for each month receives a $500 cash prize, thanks to a generous sponsorship by Dr. Randy Tillman of Natchez.
Organizers call this the “Sunset Capital of the South Contest” because of Natchez’s endless opportunities for photographers to capture stunning images of the golden hour, from the shimmering waters of the Mississippi River to the historic architecture that graces the city skyline.
“We invite everyone to join us in celebrating Natchez’s stunning nightly spectacle through our monthly ‘Sunset Capital of The South’ photo contest,” said Mayor Dan Gibson in announcing the contest. “Natchez sunsets are truly a sight to behold, and we look forward to seeing the creativity and talent of our community on display.”
Participants are encouraged to submit photos showcasing various aspects of Natchez at the Magic Sunset Hour, including the river, bridge, bandstand, Under the Hill, people, pets, events, aerial views, and more.
All submissions are publicized, allowing photographers to share their work with a broader audience and contribute to promoting Natchez as a premier destination.
Each month, a winner is selected by a panel of judges chosen by Arts Natchez, a local arts organization dedicated to promoting creativity and cultural enrichment in the community. While professional photographers are welcome to submit to the showcase, they are not eligible for cash prizes.
“Through this contest, we aim to highlight Natchez’s greatest asset – its stunning sunsets – and showcase the talent and creativity of our residents,” said Leon Hollis of Arts Natchez, representing Arts Natchez. “The Bluff is not just a great spot for a photo op — it’s the evening gathering to reflect, stroll, and chat with old and new friends.”
