NATCHEZ — The Nov. 20 public hearing set by the Mississippi Public Service Commission to hear the annual report of Great River Utility Company in Natchez has been canceled.

Great River is the water utility for about 300 residences in the Brooklyn Road area of Morgantown.

The hearing has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 3, immediately following the commission’s December open meeting at 10 a.m. meeting in the commission’s hearing room on the first floor of the Woolfolk State Office Building, 501 N. West St., Jackson.

The hearing will continue on Wednesday, Dec. 4, if necessary.

It is widely speculated that Great River will seek a rate increase at that hearing.

On Oct. 21, Morgantown residents who are Great River customers packed the meeting of the Adams County Board of Supervisors and heard from a spokesperson for Central State Utilities, Great River’s parent company, as well as Wayne Carr, Public Service Commissioner, who represents Adams County.

Customers complained that they couldn’t afford their $107.99 water bill and that they were plagued with undrinkable water and low water pressure.

Carr said Great River was allowed to move forward with their rate increase because they put up a bond, which will kick in and reimburse customers, should their rate increase be denied.
