NATCHEZ — For the first time in seven years, Natchez native Brian Isaac will be playing football after he signed a professional football contract with the Amarillo Dusters of the National Arena League on Thursday, Oct. 31 — Halloween Day.

Oddly enough, it will be the same franchise he once played for back in 2016 and 2017, just under a different name. Back then when Isaac played, he said the franchise was known as the Amarillo Venoms. And in his first season, the then-Venoms made it to the championship game.

So what made Isaac decide to return to play football after such a long layoff and after just turning 32 years of age last Monday — Veterans Day?

“It was like déjà vu. You want to get what’s yours. I’m just happy for the opportunity,” Isaac said last Friday evening. “Opportunities open and then they close. I’m just looking to continue my football career. My head coach is Trae Ivory.”

After the 2017 season ended, Isaac returned to Natchez to coach at Trinity Episcopal Day School before it closed down for good in 2018. Years later, he said he felt like he needed to get out of Natchez and return to the sport he loves.

As for the league he is playing for once again, Isaac said, “I’m in the minor league, which is Tier 2. I’m just trying to get to Tier 4, which is the National (Football) League,” Isaac said. “When you’re in Tier 2, you’re just a phone call away.”

Isaac added that it’s been a long journey to get back on the football field and that he is excited to have another chance. As for what position he’ll be playing for the Dusters, he said he will be at linebacker.

“When you get an opportunity, you better run (with it). The sky’s the limit. Never doubt yourself,” Isaac said.
