This week’s volunteer of the week is 64-year-old Natchez resident John Holyoak. Holyoak has created a name for himself in the volunteer community as the chairman of the Natchez Community Alliance.
What are some responsibilities in the Natchez Community Alliance?
Throughout my time with the Natchez Community Alliance the things in which I have done vary. When you’re in a position such as mine, there are many responsibilities that entail what I do. Many people think that when you get to a position on the board you stop doing as much, but I was never one to attend meetings where nothing happens. Whether I am the chairman of the association or just a worker who is needed to help assemble things in the downtown area, I am going to be here to help.
How did you get started with the Natchez Community Alliance?
Almost 22 years ago it started with something as small as a want, or a need, I should say. I had this feeling like I needed to do something more for our town. So after a little bit of looking I was able to find the Natchez Community Alliance. What really caught my eye was the system of collaboration the organization has created. Under an umbrella of many different nonprofits we have been able to not only improve the downtown Natchez community with our projects and events, but to help create an environment with many different organizations where the improvement of our town is their top priority.
What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Natchez Community Alliance?
Results. I know that might seem abrupt, but the feeling of the environment and the people around us as we put in a new bench or finish up a trail is something that I think is incomparable. Knowing that we came together as a community to improve where we live as well as come together as individuals is one of the most fulfilling things I can do.
What would you say to anyone who is wanting to volunteer for your organization?
When it comes to what we do you don’t even have to be a volunteer for us, if I am being honest. All the time at meetings we have people coming into meetings and complaining about things that they could be doing on their own, whether it is some vines that have been beginning to grow too high or trash on a trail. We welcome anyone willing to volunteer, but when it comes down to it the only way that something is going to get done is if the people who do it are passionate about doing it.
