MCCOMB — Parklane Academy senior quarterback JD Dumas threw three touchdown passes and senior running back Jax Toler had three rushing touchdowns to lead the Pioneers to a 42-13 win over the Adams County Christian School Rebels on Friday night.
Dumas completed 10 of 15 passes for 209 yards with no interceptions. He threw a 12-yard touchdown pass with 4:47 left in the first quarter for an early 7-0 lead. He then connected with Kyle Rushing on a 47-yard TD strike nearly midway through the second quarter that gave the Pioneers a 14-13 lead after Miles Carter’s extra point.
Then with 2:57 left in the third quarter, Dumas threw a 23-yard TD pass to Toler that made it a 35-13 game. Toler had touchdown runs of 15 yards late in the second quarter, seven yards at the 8:49 mark of the third quarter, and 17 runs with 5:24 left in the ball game.
“They were better than we were tonight,” ACCS assistant coach Matthew Freeman said. “We just didn’t execute like we should have. They played a much better second half than we did.”
Two things really hurt the Rebels in this key MAIS District 3-5A game for both teams. They turned the ball over three times and they got deep in Parklane territory three times, only to come up with no points. And against a team as good as the Pioneers, those kinds of mistakes and missed opportunities they can take advantage of.
“We have the team to score on every drive. Most of the time when we don’t score, it’s because of something we did, whether it’s a fumble, a penalty, an interception, or a dropped pass,” Freeman said.
ACCS senior quarterback Coleman Carter scored on a three-yard run late in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-all. Then he hooked up with CJ Ferguson on a 63-yard touchdown pass, but Caleb Daugherty’s extra point was blocked, giving the Rebels a 13-7 lead with 10:02 left in the second quarter. That turned out to be their only lead of the game, and even that only last three minutes and 21 seconds. Parklane Academy (6-2, 3-0) scored the final 35 points of the game.
Carter completed nine of 18 passes for 183 yards with the one touchdown and one interception. Adrian Walker completed a halfback pass for 25 yards. Carter was also the team’s leading rusher with 65 yards on 14 carries. Walker had seven carries for 38 yards and Sean Kerry Cothern was held to 20 yards on three carries.
Ferguson had four receptions for 166 yards and one touchdown and Walker had two catches for 18 yards. Defensively, Kentrell Stampley led the Rebels with eight tackles while Chris Sewell and Braden Poole each had six tackles. Cothren as well as Ja’Coby Gaines and AJ Givens had five tackles apiece.
ACCS (5-3, 2-2) steps out of district play next Friday when it hosts Amite School Center for homecoming at 7 p.m.
