WOODVILLE — Senior quarterback Jacob Sessions finished with 225 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns – two passing and two rushing – to lead the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams to an easy 48-6 win over the Franklin Academy Cougars on Friday night.
In the MAIS 8-Man District 3-1A opener for both teams, WCCA got off to a quick start and, for the most part, kept their foot on the gas. Napoleon Howard scored on a 2-yard run and Sessions ran in for the 2-point conversion at the 8:11 mark of the first quarter.
Then after a fumble recovery by Jonathan Meredith, Sessions scored on a 55-yard run and his 2-point conversion pass to Easton Buteaux made it a 16-0 game with 7:32 to go in the first quarter. Kaden Liles threw a 46-pard TD pass to Jesse Killingsworth for Franklin Academy (0-6, 0-1), but the try for two was no good and the Cougars trailed 16-6 with 3:40 still remaining in the opening quarter.
“We started out fast. We won all three phases tonight – offense, defense, and special teams,” WCCA head coach Randy Holloway said. “I was real proud of our kids’ effort, especially after last week.
Charles Grezaffi, who along with Howard had an outstanding game on both sides of the ball, scored on a 16-yard run with 2:24 left in the first quarter to give the Rams a 22-6 lead.
It was all WCCA in the second quarter. Sessions threw touchdown passes of 35 yards to Wesley Sanchez and 19 yards to Cole Partridge to give the Rams a 34-6 lead with 6:32 left until halftime. After Buteaux thwarted a potential scoring drive by the Cougars with the first of his two interceptions at the Rams’ 6-yard line, Sessions scored on a 94-yard run and Carter Graham’s extra point gave them a 41-6 lead. Then Buteaux returned his second INT of the game 41 yards for a touchdown and Graham’s PAT made it 48-6.
Sessions had two carries for 149 yards and two touchdowns to go with 3-for-6 passing for 76 yards and two scores. Grezaffi had three carries for 68 yards and one TD while Howard had four carries for 28 yards and on TD.
“We had a trio of rushers tonight. We were well-balanced tonight. We were able to run the ball. We were able to pass the ball well,” Holloway said.
Howard also led the Rams’ defense with 10 tackles and one sack while Tucker Freeman had eight tackles and Grezaffi had seven tackles and one interception. That unit for six total turnovers – five INTs and one fumble recovery.
“Can’t say enough about our defense and how well they played,” Holloway said.
Gauge Metz had six tackles while Meredith had six tackles and one sack to go with his fumble recovery. Partridge had one interception and Brason Segura had one interception.
WCCA (5-2, 1-0) plays host to MAIS 8-Man District 3-1A rival Tensas Academy for homecoming next Friday at 7 p.m.
