NATCHEZ — It took an Adams County jury 11 minutes on Thursday evening to convict Christopher Randall of aggravated assault.
Sixth District Circuit Court Judge Carmen Drake is expected to sentence him Friday morning.
Randall, 30, is already serving a life sentence for his February 2023 conviction of murdering Christopher Lionel White Jr. on Sept. 7, 2019. Additionally, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of LaRhonda R. Ware.
While awaiting that trial, Randall was part of four inmates who attacked inmate Andre Cage in the Adams County Jail on Nov. 17, 2022.
Sixth District Attorney Tim Cotton accepted plea deals for the other three charged in the case but refused to offer a deal to Randall, he said. Cotton said video of the vicious attack showed Randall to be the ring leader.
“I did not care that he is already serving a life sentence,” Cotton said. “Randall is a bad guy, and this needed to be prosecuted.”
Cotton expressed appreciation to the three unnamed Adams County jailers who broke up the attack and saved the victim.
“They observed what was happening and selflessly put themselves into harm’s way by entering that cell block and pulling Mr. Cage out before he was further injured,” Cotton said.
Cage suffered a broken orbital bone in his face and was bleeding from the ears and mouth and going in and out of consciousness when jailers were able to get to him. He survived his injuries.
Cotton also thanked the jurors.
“We greatly appreciate those who showed up for jury duty at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning and those who were selected and remained there until a verdict was reached at 8 p.m. Thursday night,” he said. “When it works, it works.”
The trial was Assistant District Attorney Matt Kidder’s first as a prosecutor.
“He excelled. I was extremely happy to see him be able to vocalize his work product, which he has worked so hard on,” Cotton said.
