NATCHEZ — Despite being winless to start the season, MHSAA Class 7A Ocean Springs High School knew that it still had a good team. Perhaps Class 5A Natchez High School should have realized just how good the Greyhounds really are.

Ocean Springs jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 49-16 win over the Natchez High Bulldogs last Friday night at Tom F. Williams Memorial Stadium for the Greyhounds’ first-win of the season. That also gave the Bulldogs their first taste of defeat this season.

“We were humbled by a better football team. They played a more physical game. They played a more disciplined game. They executed their game plan very, very well,” Natchez High head coach Steve Davis said. “I take my hat off to coach (Jake) Bramlett and their staff. They were more hungry. They wanted it more than we did. They brought the fight to us and we couldn’t rise to the occasion.”

The Greyhounds led 14-0 after one quarter of play and were in complete control from there. They were up 35-0 after three quarter of play. The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard with a pair of fourth-quarter scores, but by then it was far too late.

“This is a learning experience that will help us down the road. I have to do a better job of getting them ready to play a team like that,” Davis said.

Natchez High (3-1) plays host to U.S. Highway 61 rival Jefferson County High School next Friday at 7 p.m.
