AMITE, La. — Tristen Fondren threw two touchdown passes and Paxton Johns had a touchdown run, but it was not enough as the Cathedral High School Green Wave lost to the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets 48-21 last Friday night in MAIS District 3-5A action.
It was the district opener for Cathedral while Oak Forest was looking to stay undefeated in district play after a 42-0 at Brookhaven Academy a week earlier.
The Yellow Jackets didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard as Kaul Perkins scored on a 41-yard run at the 9:45 mark of the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
Cathedral tied the game at 7-all on Johns’s 12-yard touchdown run and Fondren’s extra point with 10:10 left in the second quarter. It was all Oak Forest from that point forward. The Yellow Jackets scored touchdowns on their next three drives to take a 28-7 lead into halftime. And that included a 6-yard TD run by Tanner Spears with 1:06 to go until halftime.
The Green Wave cut the lead to 28-14 on Fondren’s 10-yard TD pass to Terrance Lee with 8:24 remaining in the third quarter. But the Yellow Jackets responded with two touchdown drives of their own later in that same quarter to go up 41-14.
But Oak Forest (3-1, 2-0) would not let up as Cole Covington threw a 21-yard TD pass to Kade Perkins with 9:32 left in the game to go up 48-14 by going for, and making the extra point instead of going for two. A successful two-point conversion would have given OFA a 35-point lead and the use of a running clock for the rest of the game.
Fondren then threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Owen Jordan with 7:45 left in the ball game.
Cathedral (2-3, 0-1) plays host to district foe Brookhaven Academy at D’Evereux Stadium for homecoming at 7 p.m. next Friday.
