NATCHEZ — Any chance that Cathedral High School’s varsity softball team had of defeating Copiah Academy last Monday afternoon pretty much ended in the first inning of this important MAIS District 4-5A game for both teams.

KG Fisher’s double in the first inning turned out to be the only base hit for Cathedral as the Lady Green Wave fell to the Copiah Academy Lady Colonels 3-0 to grab a firm grip of first place in the district standings.

“We couldn’t get anything going offensively. Our best opportunity to put runs on the board was in the first inning, but Copiah was able to get out of the inning without us scoring,” Lady Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said. “The rest of the game our opportunities were very limited.”

Lily Crum did her best to keep Cathedral in the game as she held Copiah Academy scoreless through three innings. However, the Lady Colonels scored three runs off Crum in the top of the fourth inning and that turned out to be the only runs scored.

Crum pitched a complete game and gave up three runs, two of them earned, while holding a good-hitting Copiah Academy team to just two hits. She struck out an astounding 17 batters, but she also walked four batters and the defense behind her committed two errors.

Besides Fisher, only two other Lady Green Wave players reached base. Liza Gregg was hit by a pitch and EC Lewis reached on an error.

“We have to refocus and finish the regular season strong and get ready for South State,” Beesley said.

Marissa Spitchley was the winning pitcher for Copiah Academy. She struck out 10 batters and walked just one batter in her complete-game performance.

The Lady Green Wave’s junior varsity and varsity home games against Oak Forest Academy that were scheduled for last Tuesday afternoon were rained out.

Cathedral (15-3, 2-2) doesn’t play again until Monday, Sept. 16, when the Lady Green Wave plays host to district foe St. Aloysius High School with the JV game at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m.
