FERRIDAY, La. — Funeral services for Johnnie Lorena Carter, 93 of Ridgecrest, will be held at Young’s Funeral Home Chapel in Ferriday, on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11 a.m. with Bro. Jack McKeithen and Bro. Robby Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Natchez under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.

Johnnie Lorena Carter was born on Monday, March 16, 1931, in Camden, Arkansas, and passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024, in Monroe. She was a resident of Ridgecrest and a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church. Johnnie, the eldest of seven siblings, spent her early years working alongside her family in the fields picking cotton and helping to raise her younger brothers and sisters. She was a gifted storyteller, known for captivating the 4 and 5-year-olds she taught in Sunday School and Bible School. A passionate reader, Johnnie shared her love of books with everyone around her.

Alongside Virginia McJohnson, Johnnie volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, dedicating her time to mentoring young girls. After surviving breast cancer, she found purpose in supporting others facing the same battle by volunteering as a counselor for breast cancer patients. A long-time member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Johnnie founded the Love Circle for Widows in the church and the surrounding community following the passing of her husband. Johnnie was a spirited jokester who found humor in every moment. Known for her love of pranks and playful nature, she brought joy to all who knew her. She cherished playing games with family and friends, especially Yahtzee, where her competitive side shone. Later in life, Johnnie became a dedicated caregiver to friends in need.

Johnnie was deeply loved by those who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 wonderful years, Norris Gordan Carter, parents, Johnny and Josephine Stough, brother, Raymond Stough, three sisters, Mary June Adams, Christine Capp, and Kay Cunningham, mother-in-law, Lucille Carter, and son-in-law, Steve Sutherland.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, James Martin Carter, daughter, Bettie Foreman (Mike), daughter, Sallie Sutherland; six grandchildren, Jonathan Shelton (Suzanne), Matthew Shelton (Elizabeth), Maggie Ashley, Lea Anna Brown (Timmy), Justin Sutherland, Bailey Sutherland (Kelsey); twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grand-children; brother, Sam Stough (Tuoi Em), sister, Polly Scritchfield (JD); honorary daughter, Sandy Savage; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Those honoring her as pallbearers will be Paul Harris, Davis Ainsworth, Jay White, Mike Yearick, Denny Braswell, and Larry Lawrence.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeffery Goodman and Pete Neal.
