FERRIDAY, La. — A confrontation at a gas pump in Ferriday led to a shooting that injured a woman and the arrest of two men, one for attempted murder and another for resisting police.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30 at Adams Grocery No. 2 on Louisiana Avenue, said Ferriday Police Chief Derrick Freeman.

Rashon Maurice Ellis, 48, from Ferriday, is charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder and is currently being held at the Concordia Parish Jail with a total bond of $150,000 — $75,000 for each count.

Lucky Morales, 34, who is also from Ferriday, is charged with two counts of resisting an officer. He bonded out on Friday night with an $800 bond.

Freeman said Morales and his girlfriend were both sitting inside their vehicle at a gas pump when Ellis walked by and a verbal confrontation began between Morales and Ellis.

During the argument, Ellis “walked to his vehicle and came back with a pistol in his hand,” Freeman said.

At that point, “the guy (Morales) jumped out of the car and ran up on him like he was going to do something, but there was no physical contact before he (Ellis) shot,” Freeman said.

Ellis was apparently aiming to shoot Morales when Morales’s girlfriend got in between them and was struck in the rear, Freeman said.

She was treated at Trinity Medical Center and is expected to be OK.

Morales was arrested at the hospital after he became combative with hospital security and two Ferriday officers. The officers are OK but used a Taser on Morales to subdue him, Freeman said.

The incidents remain under investigation.

“I’m happy no one was seriously hurt,” Freeman said. “All of this reckless shooting in Ferriday is going to stop. It’s going to stop. I’m glad that Rashon turned himself in. … He was cooperative. This is still an active ongoing investigation and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure we have every player involved.
