VIDALIA, La. — An alleged threat made by a student at Vidalia High School on Monday morning turned out to be unfounded, authorities said.
Rumors had circulated of a lockdown due to a shooter at the school, but Vidalia Police Chief Joey Merrill said they were just rumors.
“There was a rumor that my school resource officer handled,” Merrill said, declining to elaborate any further. “Any other details would have to come from Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office or the school. I’m not going to make any comment.”
Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 10:40 a.m., where the caller stated that a student wanted to shoot up the Vidalia High School.
Concordia Parish Sheriff Hedrick arrived at the school and was directed by VHS faculty to the student in question but it was determined that the student did not have a gun.
The student was reportedly questioned by CPSO Investigators, resulting in no arrest.
“Thankfully, in this situation, there was not an active threat,” Hedrick said, adding, “However, when CPSO receives a call stating that there is an active shooter or any other threat at a school, I will always show up.”
