Heat advisory issued for Wilkinson and Amite counties for Friday

On Thursday at 3:23 p.m. a heat advisory was issued by the National Weather Service valid for Friday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.
The NWS says, “Heat index values up to 112 degrees expected.”
“Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” adds the NWS.
Beating the heat: NWS Heat safety guidelines
- Stay hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of fluids.
- Find cool shelter: Opt for an air-conditioned room to stay comfortable.
- Avoid sun exposure: Stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
- Child and pet safety: Never leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles, especially when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes.
- Caution outdoors: Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- Optimal timing: Consider rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening if possible.
- Recognize heat-related issues: Learn to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Dress comfortably: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool.

- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for outdoor workers.
