Update: Heat advisory affecting Wilkinson and Amite counties until Friday evening

On Friday at 2:32 p.m. an updated heat advisory was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until 8 p.m.
The NWS describes, “Heat index values up to 112 degrees expected.”
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” says the NWS.

- Stay hydrated: Keep yourself well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
- Seek cool shelter: Opt for an air-conditioned room to stay comfortable.
- Avoid sun exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure, protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Child and pet safety: Never forget to safeguard young children and pets by not leaving them unattended in vehicles, especially during scorching weather when car interiors can become life-threateningly hot.
- Caution outdoors: If you must work or spend time outdoors, take extra precautions.
- Select the ideal time: If possible, move strenuous activities to early morning or evening for more favorable conditions.
- Recognize heat-related issues: Recognize the warning signs and familiarize yourself with symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Dress for comfort: Select lightweight and loose-fitting outfits for enhanced comfort.

- For outdoor workers, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
