NATCHEZ — Mississippi Congressional delegates were quick to respond to an apparent assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump during a campaign rally on Saturday.
“There is no room in American democracy for political violence. I am grateful for law enforcement’s fast response to this incident,” said Bennie Thompson, a Democratic U.S. House Rep. from Mississippi’s Second Congressional District. “I am glad the former President is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved.”
A shooting that took place Saturday during the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, is being investigated as an assassination attempt, according to news reports. A shooter is dead and an attendee was killed.
Two other attendees are critically injured. Trump’s campaign says he is “fine” after being whisked off the stage and is being checked out at a local medical facility.
Images from the incident show the former President with blood on his cheek and ear.
Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith shared one sentence on her page asking people to join her in praying for President Trump.
Republican Senator Michael Guest said he too is praying.
“Haley and I are praying for President Trump, his family, and our country with the news coming out of Pennsylvania,” he said.
Adams County Board of Supervisors President Kevin Wilson, who has had the occasion to meet President Trump, said he was watching the rally live when the shots rang out and the former President collapsed at the podium.
“It made me sick,” Wilson said. Wilson said he found the response of some anti-Trump commenters on social media just as disheartening as the shooting.
“What is wrong with people? The man was almost killed and someone did get killed. It’s just sickening that people feel the way they do. The man could have died and other people did. I believe he (Trump) has got God’s protection over him.”
Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson joined others in praying for Trump.
“Marla and are praying tonight for former President Donald Trump and his family. We are praying also for the family of the innocent bystander who was killed in Pennsylvania today. We need prayer for our country as never before. Violence has no place in America.”
