NATCHEZ – Funeral services for Silas Jones, Jr., affectionately known as “Chun”, 98, of Natchez, who died on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in Natchez will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Jerusalem Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ernest Ford, Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow at the Smithland Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of West Gate Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024, from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home and will continue on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Silas was born on Jan. 25, 1926, the eldest child born to Silas Sr. and Excelena Jones. He was a member of the Smithland Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a Deacon until his health failed. Silas worked in construction and was employed by R.L. Hensley Construction Co. and worked as a skilled carpenter. He enjoyed discussing the Bible, talking politics, and cooking. Silas also enjoyed singing and listening to Gospel quartet music. He traveled all over the Miss-Lou area singing the first tenor with the Southland Singers Quartet. He is the last surviving member of the group.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Ford Jones and second wife, Rosie Marie Ross Jones; his parents; his sons, Walter L. and Rosevelt Jones.; daughters, Mamie L. Jones-Davis and Rosemary Jones; brothers, James Albert, Merrick, Sam, Sr., and Charles Edward Jones; and sisters, Emma R. January, Mary Joyce Robinson, and Mary Ellen Ford.
Chun leaves to cherish his memories: daughters, Gloria J. Johnson, Debby A. Green, and Jennifer Jones (Jenny Mack); sons, Aaron L. Jones, and Willie B. Jones (Quartreeta), and Johnny Hines, Jr.; brother, Theodore Jones; sister, Gloria Jackson; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, the Smithland Baptist Church extended family, and personal care providers.
