MONTEREY, La.— Hartwell Layne Tiffee, the subject of scrutiny in a 2019 unscripted, true crime television series that dipped into an unsolved suspected homicide in Concordia Parish, has recently been arrested after he allegedly made death threats to a family in Monterey.
Around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from a residence on Highway 907 in Monterey stating that security cameras on a shed had been “shot out,” said public information director Brandy Spears.
The following Sunday, at approximately 11:30, a second call was received stating that Tiffee was “threatening to kill family members” via phone call.
Officers pinged Tiffee’s phone and found him in Rapides Parish, where he had been arrested for driving under the influence, open container, speeding, expired motor vehicle insurance, failure to display license plates, possession of marijuana, and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
His bond there had been set at $2,300.
Spears said Tiffee had attempted to trade in a truck at a local dealership and failed to complete the trade-in paperwork before driving off in the dealership’s vehicle. He still had the vehicle when Rapides Parish officers arrested him, she said.
Tiffee faces charges in Concordia Parish for unauthorized use of a vehicle, simple assault and criminal damage to property with additional charges possible pending further investigation.
Season 5, episode 13 of the Cold Justice show titled “Backwater Bloodshed” delved into the cold case death of 26-year-old Duell Moreland, who went missing on March 29, 2016, from his grandparents’ residence in Monterey. One month later, Moreland’s skeletal remains were discovered by family members in a bayou.
Tiffee, a distant relative, had been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, but a grand jury decided there wasn’t enough evidence to indict him.
The show aired on Oxygen in 2019.
