NATCHEZ – Herbert Dodds Whitehead, 79, of Lake St John, LA, died peacefully Friday, May 17, 2024, in his home.
He was born on Aug. 9, 1944, to Leonard James Jr. and Evelyn Jackson Whitehead in Roxie, Mississippi.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jimmy Clyde and Paul Whitehead, and his beloved wife of 34 years, Mary Beth Whitehead.
Herbert graduated from Natchez High School in 1962 and attended The University of Southern Mississippi.
He worked as a Distribution Manager and retired from Red Ball Motor Freight before starting his own accounting business, Easy Tax, later in life. He was also the owner and operator of the Pic-a-Flick Video in Natchez.
He was an avid fisherman, a compelling storyteller, a stock market savant, a devoted son, husband, brother, cousin, uncle, and one of Bob Dylan’s biggest fans. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ferriday.
Herbert is survived by his siblings, Sylvia Watts (Shelby, deceased) of Raymond, MS, John Whitehead (Janna) of Destin, FL, and Terrie Shroyer (Duane) of Birmingham, AL, and his cousin, Malcom Whitehead (Carolyn) of Natchez, MS. He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 10 a.m. and the Memorial service at 11 a.m. at Laird Funeral Home in Natchez. Interment will follow at Natchez Cemetery. The service will be officiated by Dr. Todd Whitehead.
Pallbearers will be Malcom Whitehead (cousin), Dr. Duane Shroyer (brother-in-law), Dr. Dean Shroyer (nephew), and Dr. Todd Whitehead (2nd cousin).
Honorary pallbearers are Don Vines (friend), Jimmy Smith (friend), Vidal Davis (friend), and Drew Shroyer (nephew).
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Karen Molnar and her son, Grantham for their compassionate care and devotion to Herbert.
