Aug. 30, 1946 – March 21, 2024

NATCHEZ – It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Carolyn Britton Davis Gammill on March 21, 2024. Britton was born on Aug. 30, 1946, to Alfred Vidal “Buddy” and Annie Fred Davis. She grew up surrounded by family in the downtown area of Natchez also known as Clabber Alley. Upon graduating from high school, she attained her college degree from MSCW. She met her husband, James David Gammill (Jimmy), and moved to South Dakota. They returned to Natchez and started their life including children, careers, and family. Britton adored her family and Natchez. Some of her most cherished moments included time at Lake Mary with her parents and siblings. Family get-togethers and holidays were made into precious memories by her wonderful cooking, sense of humor, and love bringing everyone closer together. In 1989, she and Jimmy started Fat Mama’s Tamales on Canal Street in the little log cabin. It was a labor of love they spent much time perfecting. Fat Mama’s has been a fixture in Natchez since that time.

Britton is predeceased by her parent, Buddy and Annie Fred Davis, and a sister, Poppy Davis Willard.

She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Gammill; two children, Poppy Denker and David Gammill and his wife, Devin; grandchildren Reed, Hayes, Surget Denker and James Gammill; sister, Anne Vidal Willett and husband, Joey Suen; brother, Vidal Davis and wife, Tanna and three nieces, Cameron, Britton, and Allison Willard.

A family burial will take place at a later date per Britton’s request.
