BOSSIER CITY, La. — Owen Jordan and Reid Burkley combined to pitch a one-hitter with six combined strikeouts as the Cathedral High School Green Wave needed just five innings to take care of the Providence Classical Academy Knights 17-0 in an MAIS District 4-5A game.

Jordan, the winning pitcher, got the start on the mound and went two innings. He gave up no hits, walked one, and struck out none. Burkley came on in relief and struck out five over three innings. Burkley was the one who gave up a single to the Knights.

“I thought he came out and filled the strike zone. He did what he needed to do and let the defense work behind him,” Green Wave head coach Andrew Beesley said about Jordan’s performance on the mound.

Beesley added that he was thrilled to see his team play well from start to finish after a long road trip from Natchez to the Shreveport-Bossier City area. 

Tristan Fondren led Cathedral’s 13-hit barrage by going 3-for-3 with a triple while Houston Edwards and Walker Probst each went 2-for-2. Josh Ingram was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Ethan Keith also had a double.

“I thought we came out and played pretty well. The kids were able to stay locked in and got some good at-bats,” Beesley said. “They drove the ball well into the gaps. I was proud of the way they competed at the plate.”

Defensively, Cathedral committed just one error while district newcomer Providence Classical Academy committed three errors.

The Green Wave scored one run in the top of the first inning before putting the game completely out of reach with five runs in the top of the second inning and nine runs in the top of the third. They scored their final two runs of the game in the top of the fifth.

With the win, Cathedral (19-4 overall, 8-2 in District 4-5A) is now just one win away from claiming the district championship. And the Green Wave will get that opportunity on Friday when they play host to Providence Classical Academy at Chester Willis Field for a varsity doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
