CENTREVILLE — Cathedral High School’s Owen Jordan held Centreville Academy to just two hits and struck out seven batters as the Green Wave used a 10-run third inning to defeat the Tigers 12-0 in four innings last Tuesday afternoon.

Jordan went all four innings for Cathedral and walked just one batter. Green Wave head coach Andrew Beesley said that Jordan was pretty much in complete control on the mound and had Centreville Academy batters guessing which pitch they would have to deal with.

“Owen gave us a good quality start on the mound and we put up some runs for him. I felt like he had all three pitches working well (Tuesday) night),” Beesley said. “He located his fastball really well and he stopped up his curveball and changeup along with that.”

However, the Green Wave struggled at the plate against Tigers starting pitcher Ace Sellers in the first two innings. Cathedral failed to score in the top of the first inning and scored just one run against Sellers in the top of the second for a 1-0 lead.

Then out of seemingly nowhere, Cathedral’s bats finally woke up in the top of the third inning and eventually ran Sellers out of the game. The Green Wave would end up scoring 10 runs in that frame to go up 11-0.

“I thought we came out a little slow. Which isn’t surprising coming off Easter break,” Beesley said. “But the kids responded well and put together some good at-bats.”

The biggest hits in the top of the third for Cathedral were by Josh Ingram and Tristan Fondren as each of them had a two-RBI single. Then in the top of the fourth inning, Walker Probst drove in a run on a sacrifice fly that put the run rule in effect by going up 12-0. Jordan then kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth to end the game early.

What was perhaps the biggest surprise out of this non-district game was that neither team had an extra-base hit and no Green Wave player had at least two base hits. Cathedral was also aided by three Tigers errors.

Sellers lasted two and one-third innings as he gave up seven runs, six of them earned, on two hits and four walks. He also struck out three batters.

Cathedral (15-3) played host to Loyd Star Attendance Center on Thursday at Chester Willis Field with the junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
