NATCHEZ — A man with active warrants was apprehended immediately after a brief struggle during a traffic stop on Friday morning. However, the female driver who was with him managed to get back into the vehicle and led officers on a low-speed chase through Natchez and Adams County.

Deputies initiated the traffic stop on a white Nissan Altima being driven by Shonkerria Calvin for an expired license plate on Providence Road a little after 8 a.m. Friday.

During the traffic stop, deputies learned that the passenger, Antonio Coleman, had active warrants with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the Natchez Police Department. While deputies were talking to both individuals and advised them they were going to search the vehicle, Coleman was taken into custody after a brief struggle. Calvin pulled away from deputies got back in the driver’s side of the car and fled from the traffic stop.

Deputies attempted to stop Calvin and a low-speed pursuit ensued through the parts of Natchez. While attempting to turn on Franklin Street from Canal Street, Calvin struck another vehicle, causing damage but no injuries.

Natchez Police Department was able to block most intersections going through the City of Natchez to prevent any other damage to property. Calvin continued to elude law enforcement as she drove out on Martin Luther King Jr. Road into the county. She led officers into Broadmoor Subdivision and proceeded out East Wilderness Road, eventually making her way to U.S. 61 North.

Within an hour of the initial traffic stop, deputies were able to bring the pursuit to an end on U.S. 61 North between the Natchez Trace and State Park Road without any injuries or damage to any vehicles.

Calvin was taken into custody without any further incident.

Coleman was charged with possession of a schedule I drug (Ecstasy) with intent to distribute, possession of a schedule II drug (Crack Cocaine) with intent to distribute and possession of a schedule I drug (less than 30 grams of marijuana).

Calvin has been charged with felony fleeing law enforcement, careless driving, failure to comply, and expired registration.

Before the pursuit Friday, she was out on a $15,000 bond for an aggravated domestic violence charge from March 9.

Justice Court Judge Danny Barber revoked Calvin’s bond on Friday during her arraignment, so she is held with no bond. Barber issued Coleman a $501,000 bond for his three charges.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten thanked the Natchez Police Department for their assistance during the pursuit and the apprehension of Calvin.
