NATCHEZ — The inclement weather that roared through south Mississippi last Tuesday morning forced a couple of local and area baseball games to be either postponed until later this season or canceled altogether.

Natchez High School was scheduled to host South Jones High School for the Bulldogs’ MHSAA Region 3-5A opener at Chester Willis Field Tuesday afternoon, but the rough weather caused both the junior varsity and varsity games were called off.

Bulldogs head coach Dan Smith said he would get with Braves head coach Mason Strickland about when those games will be rescheduled when Natchez High traveled to Ellisville to take on South Jones for a varsity doubleheader on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The varsity doubleheader between Natchez High and South Jones was originally scheduled for Friday afternoon, but the threat of heavy rain and possible severe thunderstorms that were due to arrive as early as mid- to late-morning on Friday ahead of a strong cold front forced the twin-bill to be pushed back to Thursday.

Adams County Christian School was to host Centreville Academy for a JV game and a varsity game Tuesday afternoon, but unplayable field conditions caused by the heavy rain and storms forced those games to be canceled.

Head coach Jake Winston said he hopes that those games will be rescheduled. As of Wednesday morning, Winston said that Friday’s games at Centreville Academy are still on. The JV game will be at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

“That’s the schedule that we’re going to stick to now, weather permitting,” Winston said.

And those were not the only games that were affected by the stormy weather earlier this week. Monday afternoon’s thunderstorms forced the cancellation of Cathedral High School’s home JV and varsity games at Chester Willis Field against Porter’s Chapel Academy.

“It rained a lot,” Green Wave head coach Andrew Beesley said. “As of now it’s not (going to be rescheduled).”

Cathedral’s home games that were scheduled for Friday afternoon against Brookhaven Academy were moved to Thursday because of the threat of bad weather. The JV game started at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game followed at 7 p.m.

Beesley said he added a game last Wednesday when the Green Wave traveled to McComb to take on Parklane Academy with the JV game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

Vidalia High School’s home JV and varsity games against Buckeye High School were also postponed due to the inclement weather. Efforts to reach Vikings head coach Seth Thompson to find out if those games would be rescheduled or not were unsuccessful.
