LOYD STAR — After giving up a five-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cathedral High School Green Wave responded with two runs to take back the lead in the top of the seventh as they held off the Loyd Star Attendance Center Hornets 8-7 last Friday night.
Ethan Keith got the start on the mound for Cathedral and had quite an impressive outing. He struck out seven batters, gave up just two hits and walked only two over four and two-thirds quality innings.
“He gave us a good four and two-thirds innings. He did a really good job on the mound. He gave us a chance to win the game,” Green Wave second-year head coach Andrew Beesley said.
The Green Wave scored three runs in the top of the second inning before Loyd Star scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game. Cathedral appeared ready to put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the sixth for a 6-1 advantage.
However, a couple of defensive breakdowns allowed the Hornets to strike for six runs in the bottom of the sixth and just like that the home lead led 7-6. But the Green Wave answered with a two-run rally in the top of the seventh to retake the lead at 8-7.
Landon French came on in relief to close out the game and he did just that. He gave up no runs, no hits, walked just one, and struck out two to preserve the Green Wave’s undefeated record, which is now at 4-0.
“We had a few mistakes on defense and they were able to take advantage of them,” Beesley said. “But our kids fought hard and came back in the top of the seventh.”
Cathedral (4-0) traveled to Bude to take on Franklin County High School on Tuesday with the junior varsity game at either 4 or 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
