VIDALIA — Even though this was a non-district game, last Tuesday night’s Concordia Parish rivalry game between the Vidalia High School Lady Vikings and the Ferriday High School Lady Trojans still meant a lot to both teams.
Ferriday held its own with Vidalia for much of the first half, but the third quarter is when the Lady Vikings took over as they ended up defeated the Lady Trojans 66-37 at the Vidalia High School gym.
Vidalia junior guard Chesney Williams led all scorers with 21 points, sophomore guard Makenzie Watson poured in 19 points, and junior center/forward Kiara Washington added 14 points.
“Chesney set the tone for us. She played well on defense and she played well on offense. She distributed the ball to her teammates. She had six assists,” Lady Vikings head coach Flora McKnight said. “She’s our point guard. We started off slow because I have some younger players.”
Vidalia only led Ferriday 13-8 after one quarter of play. The Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Trojans 17-11 in the second quarter to take a 30-19 lead into halftime. But Ferriday’s youth and inexperience showed in the third quarter as the Lady Trojans only scored six points while Vidalia put up 23 points for a 53-25 lead.
“Kiara Washington, she’s a senior. She showed her leadership. When you play your rival school, everybody’s ready to go and you have to settle down and play the game. And that’s what they did,” McKnight said. “Ferriday, they’re young, but they get after you. And they played hard.”
- Clay and Z. Pryor led Ferriday with 11 points apiece while Z. Boxley added seven points. The Lady Trojans fell to 5-8 overall. They don’t play again until Tuesday, Jan. 16 when they play host to Vidalia in the LHSAA District 2-2A opener for both teams.
The Lady Vikings improved to 10-6 overall. They next play at Mangham High School at 6 p.m. Tuesday in yet another non-district game.
