NATCHEZ — It was a good weekend for the Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs in preparation for MHSAA Region 3-5A play as they won both of their games, but not so much for the Natchez High School Bulldogs.
In varsity girls’ action, the Class 5A Natchez High School Lady Bulldogs first took care of the Franklin County High School Lady Bulldogs, one of their longtime non-region and nearby rivals, 54-21 last Friday night.
Then Natchez High traveled to Perkinston and more specifically the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for the MGCCC Classic as the Lady Bulldogs took on Class 4A Pass Christian High School last Saturday afternoon.
It didn’t take long for the Lady Bulldogs to take control of this game as they cruised to a 52-23 victory over the Lady Pirates.
How bad was it for Pass Christian in the early stages of this game? The Lady Pirates’ only point in the first quarter was at the free-throw line and they were lucky to trail just 11-1 at the end of the quarter.
The Lady Pirates did manage to outscore the Lady Bulldogs 13-12 in the second quarter to go into halftime down 23-14. However, any thoughts of an upset quickly disappeared when Natchez High dominated Pass Christian on both ends of the court in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs put up 20 points in that quarter while limiting the Lady Pirates to a mere five points for a 43-19 advantage. The Lady Bulldogs then outscored the Lady Pirates 9-4 in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 10-3 with the win. They travel to Summit to take on North Pike High School at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Region 3-5A opener for both teams.
In varsity boys’ action, the Class 3A Franklin County High School Bulldogs made the short drive to Natchez and came away with a stunning 52-49 victory over the host Natchez High School Bulldogs.
The Natchez High Bulldogs fell to 9-3 overall and next hit the road to Summit to begin Region 3-5A play against North Pike High School at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
