NATCHEZ — Cathedral High School’s varsity basketball teams swept Centreville Academy’s varsity squads last Thursday night at the Roy A. Garcia Memorial Gymnasium on the Cathedral School campus.
In the varsity boys’ game, Grayson Gay led a balanced scoring attack for Cathedral with 18 points as the Green Wave used a pair of big quarters to defeat the Centreville Academy Tigers 62-44.
Gibson Hillyer, who led Cathedral’s junior varsity boys’ Green Wave past Centreville Academy’s JV Tigers with a game-high 14 points in a 42-12 win earlier in the night, got some playing time in the varsity game and he made the most of it as he poured in 13 points.
Fred Lane contributed for the Green Wave with 10 points and Justin Hawkins chipped in with eight points. Cathedral had its way with Centreville on both ends of the court in the first quarter and led 21-5 by quarter’s end.
The Tigers played better both offensively and defensively in the second quarter as they outscored the Green Wave 13-10 to go into halftime down 31-18. However, any thoughts of the visitors continuing their momentum after that didn’t last very long as Cathedral put up 15 points in the third quarter while holding Centreville to just six points for a 46-24 advantage.
Centreville managed to score 20 points in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers couldn’t make nearly enough stops on the other end to truly put any pressure on Cathedral as the Green Wave scored 16 points for the 18-point victory.
The Green Wave improved to 6-3 overall. MAIS Class 5A Cathedral stepped up in competition Saturday afternoon as it traveled to Flowood to take on Class 6A Jackson Preparatory School at either 4 or 4:30 p.m.
