NATCHEZ — Cathedral High School’s varsity baseball team had to come from behind to defeat both Franklin County High School and Vidalia High School to sweep a home doubleheader last Friday night at Chester Willis Field.

Thanks to an 11-run rally in the bottom of the second inning, the Green Wave went on to defeat the Franklin County Bulldogs 13-3 in six innings in the first game of the varsity doubleheader.

Franklin County scored two runs in the top of the first inning, including a walk of Jamari Tolliver which scored a run. The Bulldogs plated another run in the top of the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Then Cathedral responded with its big rally in the bottom of the second that gave starting and winning pitcher Will Mabry some much-needed run support.

Mabry even helped his own cause when he singled in three runs. In that frame, the Green Wave got an RBI double from Trey Gill as well as run-scoring singles by Jake Hairston and JT Taylor.

During the bottom of the second, Bulldogs starting pitcher Sam Cowart was pulled after getting just one batter out. He went a total of one and one-third innings and gave up six runs on two hits and five walks.

Cowart was relieved by Tolliver, who gave up five more runs before pitching three straight scoreless innings to keep the Bulldogs from being run-ruled but got no run support.

The Green Wave plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to finally end the game early. Mabry allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six batters. Mason Moore came on in relief and pitched three innings of two-hit shutout ball with one walk and five strikeouts.

Gill went 2-for-2 with the double, one run batted in, three runs scored and two stolen bases. Ben White was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Taylor was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one stolen base.

In the nightcap, Cathedral once again found itself down 3-0 before rallying over the middle innings for a 13-4 win over the Vidalia Vikings.

Trey Johnson had an RBI single in the top of the first inning and then Vidalia scored two runs in the top of the second.

The Green Wave responded with a three-run rally in the bottom of the third inning and took the lead for good with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Cathedral put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Vikings only managed one run after the second inning and that was in the top of the sixth.

Ronnie McMillan was the winning pitcher after giving up just one earned run on two hits and one walk with five strikeouts over four innings. Starting pitcher Noah Russ went three innings and gave up three runs, only one earned, on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Peyton Fort was the losing pitcher for Vidalia as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts in four innings.

McMillan went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases to lead Cathedral (4-1) at the plate. White was 2-for-2 with four RBIs, two walks and one stolen base. Russ was 2-for-3 with one RBI, two runs scored, and one stolen base. Taylor was 2-for-4 with one stolen base and two runs scored. Gill had a single, one RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Only two players for Vidalia had base hits. Johnson was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Brett Walsworth was 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored.
