JACKSON — The Mississippi Golf Association held its second annual Hall of Fame banquet last Saturday night at the Country Club of Jackson and two Natchezians won some prestigious awards.
Cathedral High School senior Kayla Starr won the award for Female Golfer of the Year in her age group, 16 to 18. Bill Byrne, a member of the Mississippi Golf Association Board of Directors, said this was a great award for her to win.
“She was told to give a speech and she was very gracious in it,” Byrne said. “I’ve been watching her the past couple of years develop her swing at Beau Pré (Country Club). She’s played a lot of tournament golf in the summer. She has a very good swing coach that works with her. She’s got a good high school coach in Kurt Russ.”
Byrne added that Starr has a bright future ahead of her in the game of golf.
Duncan Park golf course superintendent Greg Brooking won the Robbie Webb Award for promoting junior golf in the state of Mississippi.
While Brooking has won six Bill McKenney Memorial City Golf Championships as well as the 2017 Super Senior Amateur championship and qualified for the USGA Senior Amateur in 2013, Byrne said Brooking receiving this award was even more special.
“To me, this trumps everything he has done in golf,” Byrne said. “This trumps everything he has accomplished (on the course).”
