NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams Council on Aging serves some 300 to 400 senior citizens and people with disabilities per month.
Located in the Historic Carpenter No. 2 School, 800 Washington St., Natchez, the Senior Center offers plenty of activities and events to for seniors and disabled individuals.
The services include congregate meals served on site, home-delivered meals, adult day care services, fun senior activities, a ceramics studio, water aerobics and exercise, a computer lab with six stations, senior transportation, non-emergency medical transportation and educational and life-enhancing workshops and seminars.
“One of the most rewarding activities is Coffee with the Veterans,” said Sabrena G. Bartley, executive director of the council on aging. “It is always wonderful to visit with those persons who have served our country as we fellowship over a cup of coffee and a light breakfast snack.”
Tending to the senior citizens and disabled people’s needs is expensive and the council on aging has many needs throughout the year.
“One of my greatest wishes for this season is to offer services to a senior who is on the waiting list,” Bartley said. “The two most requested services are a meal and transportation. A gift of as little as $100 will provide a meal for a senior at the center for a month, or assist with transportation to a doctor’s appointment anywhere in the region and as far away as Jackson or Alexandria.”
Bartley said despite its mission and service to seniors, the Senior Center is not a nursing home.
“We are an activity center where the patrons gather to receive specific services, engage in activities that promote positive life enhancing outcomes and enjoy fellowship with others,” Bartley said. “We encourage those sitting around with nothing to do to come to visit the Senior Center where we strive to ‘make each day a better day for those we serve.’”
To help the Natchez-Adams Council on Aging meet the agency’s needs, donations can be made at the Natchez Senior Center, 800 Washington St., Natchez, MS 39120.
