NATCHEZ — The Cathedral High School Green Wave’s varsity basketball team has been on a bit of a roll lately while the Lady Green Wave have sputtered in recent weeks after getting off to a 6-2 start.
Both of those trends continued last Thursday night as the Green Wave cruised to a 59-23 win over the Centreville Academy Tigers while the Lady Green Wave could not hold a slim one-point lead at the half and eventually fell to the Lady Tigers 54-48 for their fifth loss in a row.
In the varsity boys’ game, Cathedral took control from the opening tip and had its way with Centreville throughout the first three quarters. By the end of the first quarter, the Green Wave led the Tigers 16-4 and it only got worse for the visitors as they scored just two points in the second quarter and found themselves trailing at halftime, 31-6.
The Tigers found a bit of a rhythm offensively in the third quarter, but they were still outscored by the Green Wave 19-9, giving the home team a commanding 50-15 advantage.
Jordan Henry led Cathedral with a game-high 13 points while Clayton Devening had 12 points and JT Taylor added 11 points. Jeff Carroll and Jake Morris led Centreville with six points each.
The win was the third in the last four games for the Green Wave, which improved to 5-6 overall heading into its game last Saturday night at home against the Parklane Academy Pioneers.
The Lady Green Wave were looking to avenge a 60-31 loss at Centreville Academy back on Nov. 19. And after Cathedral outscored the Lady Tigers 15-12 in the second quarter for a 28-27 halftime lead, it looked like that might just happen.
However, the Lady Tigers turned to their defense to put a halt to that. A low-scoring third quarter saw Centreville outscore Cathedral 11-9 for a 38-37 lead by quarter’s end. The Lady Tigers capped off their comeback win with a 16-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Savannah Hailey led the Lady Tigers with a game-high 24 points. Emilea Roberts poured in 13 points and Lacy Darden chipped in with nine points. Cathedral was led by Cate Drane with 17 points, Lauren Dunbar with 12 points, and Ryleigh Probst with seven points.
The Lady Green Wave (6-7) played host to the Parklane Academy Lady Pioneers Saturday night as part of a six-game set that started at 1 p.m.
